Range Rover Evoque Insurance Tracker: What You Need - LRD Track

Range Rover Evoque Insurance Tracker: What You Need

If your insurer has asked for a tracker on your Range Rover Evoque, you need a Thatcham-certified device, almost always Category S5 or S7, fitted by a professional and kept on an active monitoring subscription. Get the wording of your policy confirmed first. Then choose the tracker that matches it. That order saves you money and stops you buying a device your insurer won’t accept.

The Evoque is a target. Thieves know it, and so do underwriters. Here is how to work out exactly what your policy needs, and how to meet it without overspending. 🚗🔒

TL;DR

  • ✅ Insurers who ask for a tracker on an Evoque usually mean a Thatcham-certified S5 or S7 system. The older categories 5, 6 and 7 were replaced on 1 January 2019.
  • ✅ A certified tracker does not guarantee a discount. Thatcham says any reduction is up to your insurer, so ask whether it is a condition of cover or a premium saver.
  • ✅ Factory connected services are not the same thing as an insurance-approved tracker. Do not assume they satisfy your policy.
  • ✅ Professional installation and an active subscription both matter. A lapsed subscription can put your cover at risk.
  • ✅ Our S7 starts at £179 and our S5 at £349, both one-off hardware prices. Subscription costs are separate.

Why insurers worry about the Evoque

The Evoque is compact, desirable and easy to sell on or ship abroad in parts. That combination makes it attractive to organised thieves, particularly in cities. Many Evoque owners have found that insurers either load premiums heavily or ask for extra security before they will quote at all.

The picture is improving in places, but the risk has not gone away. The West Midlands Police and Crime Commissioner’s 2026 figures show Land Rover thefts in the region fell by 37.6% between 2024 and 2025, from 774 to 483 incidents. That is a real drop. It is also 483 vehicles in one region in one year, and Land Rover is still one of the brands professional thieves go after.

The method is often keyless relay theft: signals from your fob are amplified so the car thinks the key is nearby. Once the car is gone, a tracker is the difference between a recovery and a write-off. Even clumsy thieves get caught this way. One Birmingham case saw a stolen £75,000 Evoque recovered after the thieves left its tracker device in their own car.

Insurers read that risk in pounds. Evoque insurance groups generally run from 24 to 41 for models from 2019 onwards, and 28 to 43 for older ones. Your postcode and driving history then do the rest. One UK cost guide puts Range Rover premiums anywhere from £266 to £823 a year in average-risk postcodes, and £3,000 or more in high-theft areas of London. Your own quote will differ.

What “insurance approved” actually means

In the UK, “insurance approved” nearly always means certified by Thatcham Research, the body insurers rely on to assess vehicle security. Two categories matter for trackers:

  • S5 (Vehicle Tracking System). Per the Thatcham product definitions, it replaced the old Category 5 and 6 from 1 January 2019. Its job is to detect unauthorised use of your vehicle and improve the chances of recovering it. S5 systems add features such as driver identification and remote immobilisation.
  • S7 (Asset Location System). It replaced the old Category 7 and locates a vehicle once it has been reported stolen. It is the simpler, lower-cost option.

The rule of thumb for an Evoque: the higher your theft risk, the more likely your insurer wants S5. Some will accept S7. Some want an immobiliser as well. We cover the full detail in our guides to the Thatcham S5 tracker and the Thatcham S7 tracker.

Do not confuse factory services with an approved tracker

This catches a lot of owners out. Your Evoque may have built-in connected services. Land Rover’s own page notes that access to some services depends on your vehicle’s InControl subscriptions. They are handy for finding the car in a car park or checking fuel.

They are not the same as a Thatcham-certified system with 24/7 monitoring behind it. Thatcham’s own Q&A points owners to the vehicle manufacturer for what is fitted to their car, and your insurer may still ask for a separate S5 or S7 aftermarket system. Ask them in plain words: “Does my factory system count, or do I need an aftermarket device?”

Step by step: sorting an insurer-required tracker

  1. Read your policy or renewal letter. Look for words like “approved tracking device”, “Thatcham category” or “security condition”.
  2. Phone your insurer or broker. Ask which category they require (S5, S7 or either), and whether they also want an immobiliser.
  3. Ask the discount question. Is the tracker a condition of cover, or will it lower your premium? Thatcham is clear that any saving is at the insurer’s discretion.
  4. Choose a device that matches the wording. Buy what they name, not what looks closest.
  5. Book a professional installation. Don’t try it yourself (see below).
  6. Send your insurer proof. Keep the installation certificate and activation confirmation.
  7. Keep the subscription live. More on that below.

Some insurers have been reluctant to cover Land Rover products at all. Industry commentary describes a “premium crisis”, which is why talking to your insurer or a specialist broker before you buy is worth the phone call. They define the security layers your Evoque needs to be insurable.

Why professional installation is not optional

It is tempting to buy a cheap box online and fit it yourself. For insurance purposes that is a gamble. Thatcham certification relates to the product and how it is fitted, and a DIY or amateur installation often fails to meet insurers’ criteria, even if the hardware is good. You would be paying for a tracker that does nothing for your policy.

Professional fitting also means the unit is hidden where thieves are unlikely to look, wired correctly and tested before it leaves you. We fit across the UK. Our Range Rover tracker installation guide walks through what happens on the day.

Keep the subscription running

An insurance-grade tracker is not a one-off purchase. The hardware is paid once, but the monitoring runs on a subscription, and that 24/7 monitoring is part of what makes S5 and S7 systems count.

If your insurer required the tracker, a lapsed subscription could be grounds for them to question a claim. Set a reminder, use a card that will not expire mid-year, and tell us if your payment details change. Pricing depends on the tracker line, so check the product page for your chosen device. Our DEFEND subscription is £6 per month and DEFEND-Plus is £10 per month, but those are for our non-Thatcham range, so only choose them if your insurer has said a non-Thatcham tracker is acceptable.

Our view as Land Rover specialists

We only work on Land Rover vehicles, and that shapes how we advise Evoque owners.

First, we think in layers. A tracker tells you where the car went. An immobiliser stops it going in the first place. Insurers increasingly want both on high-risk models, and thieves who defeat one layer often stall at the next. That is why we push owners with an Evoque in a high-theft postcode towards an S5 Plus rather than the cheapest box that technically ticks a form.

Second, buy for the policy you have, not the one you fear. If your insurer says S7 is enough, paying for S5 Plus is money you could have kept. If they say S5, an S7 will not do, however good the price looks. We would rather tell you that on the phone than sell you the wrong box.

Third, speed matters after a theft. Stolen vehicles can be moved or loaded for export quickly, so the first hour counts. Our write-up on export theft tracking explains why alerts and 24/7 monitoring are worth more than a feature list.

Last, tell your insurer once the tracker is in. A device they do not know about cannot help your quote.

Other ways to harden your Evoque

A tracker is one layer. A few cheap habits add more:

  • 🔑 Keep your key fob in a signal-blocking pouch at home. The West Midlands PCC urges owners to take simple steps such as extra security devices, well-lit parking and protecting keyless entry vehicles.
  • 🔒 Add a visible deterrent, such as a steering lock.
  • 🏠 Park in a garage or behind a locked gate if you can.
  • 📱 Switch on tracker alerts on your phone so you see movement the moment it happens.

None of this replaces what your insurer asks for. It simply makes your Evoque a harder, less appealing target.

FAQ

Does an Evoque need a tracker for insurance?

Not by law, but some insurers require one as a condition of cover, especially in high-theft postcodes or for newer models. Requirements vary by insurer and by your postcode. Check your policy, then ask your insurer or broker which Thatcham category they accept.

Will a tracker lower my Evoque insurance?

It might, but it is not guaranteed. Thatcham says a certified product does not automatically bring a discount, and any reduction is at the insurer’s discretion. Ask for a quote with and without the device before you buy.

Is S5 or S7 better for an Evoque?

S5 is the more comprehensive system, with features such as driver identification and remote immobilisation, and insurers often ask for it on high-value vehicles. S7 is simpler and cheaper. The better choice is whichever your insurer names in writing.

Can I fit the tracker myself?

We would not advise it. Insurers often expect a professional installation, and an amateur fit can leave you with a device that does not satisfy your policy. Book a certified fitter and keep the paperwork.

What happens if I stop paying the subscription?

The 24/7 monitoring stops, and your insurer may then treat the tracker as not meeting the condition of your policy. That could affect a claim. Keep the subscription active for as long as the insurer needs the tracker.
