I had this fitted during the recent restoration of my vehicle. I do know that the restorer had to modify the catching mechanism to fit the older style bonnet of my 300tdi as it clashed with my full sized radiator. This would have been beyond my skill set to fit but for an expert no problem.
It hasn't made any difference to the bonnet operation. It has been a fit and forget item that does exactly what it's supposed to do, shield the bonnet release cable from the outside, making access to the engine more difficult, provided that is that someone hasn't already accessed the interior of the vehicle! At £35, a no brainer.
I'm pleased with the purchase and the fitting instructions come with pictures, which is helpful. It needed additional steps to fit on my 2010 Puma however, as the cable securing screw (7mm head) fits into a small plate, with the cable held in place below. (In LRD's instructions, the cable goes through a hole in the screw itself.) To refit, I needed to bring this plate forward, which meant unscrewing the bonnet lock plate, to allow sufficient movement for the cable to be re-inserted. Ensure you make markings at each side of the bonnet lock plate (as instructed in the Haynes Defender Manual) to aid positioning when you refit - this ensures the bonnet latches correctly.
this is an excellent added level of protection. It required some adjustment to fit on my Puma however its on and doing its job.
Removing your old guard drilling out the rivets is simple enough. Releasing the cable is fine... When fitting the new guard, I had a choice to either take out the LH bonnet latch nut and bolt or give the guard a little 'manipulation'. With a bit of adjustment it fitted and riveted into place all of the holes aligned exactly with the origional. I then drilled a 5th hole and added an additional rivet at the LHS for extra security. The fiddly part is refitting the cable and tightening the retaining bolt... A pair of needle nosed pliers would make this much easier! Finally, don't go at this all guns blazing and fit the small cable cover BEFORE you remove AND refit the release cable because you'll have to drill it off again! (I didn't, but was tempted at the start, I actually followed the instructions for a change.)
Excellent product, relatively easy to fit. Well made and does the job.
